Amboseli has long held near-mythical status among safarigoers, and it’s easy to see why: vast elephant herds moving across open plains, with Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped summit as a permanent backdrop. Kitirua Plains Lodge was designed to sit inside that landscape rather than compete with it.
Curved walls echo the undulating terrain, and the exterior plaster is mixed with soil sourced right from the site, a nod to Maasai principles of living lightly on the land.
Even the infinity pool tucks neatly into an existing wetland rather than disrupting it. The result is architecture that feels less like a hotel and more like an extension of the plains themselves.
Suites With a View of Africa’s Most Famous Mountain
The lodge has 11 one-bedroom suites (116 sqm) and two spacious two-bedroom suites (242 sqm), each positioned so that Kilimanjaro is framed from bed or from the bath, for guests who prefer their mountain views a little more indulgent.
Every suite comes with a shaded private veranda, indoor and outdoor showers, air conditioning, a mini bar, and the kind of soft, natural palette that makes it easy to simply sit still and watch the wildlife drift by.
Both two-bedroom suites are ideal for families or two couples travelling together, with a shared lounge and dining area built for private, unhurried meals.
Life on the Plains, Twice a Day
Mornings and afternoons are built around expert-led game drives into one of Africa’s most biodiverse habitats. Elephants are the headline act, but lions, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and over 400 recorded bird species share the stage.
Every guest is issued a pair of Leica binoculars for the stay, which makes a genuine difference when you’re trying to pick out a leopard from half a kilometre away.
For something further afield, a hot-air balloon flight over Amboseli at dawn is worth the early wake-up call watching Kilimanjaro take shape in the first light while the lodge itself shrinks to a speck below is an experience clients tend to talk about for years.
There are also guided visits to nearby Maasai communities, offering a genuine look at the region’s culture and the healthcare, education and enterprise initiatives A&K Philanthropy supports locally.

Getting There
It’s a straightforward connection: a 45-minute flight from Nairobi to Amboseli Airstrip, followed by a scenic 40-minute drive to the lodge. Light aircraft luggage restrictions apply (20kg/33lbs per person, soft-sided bags), so it’s worth briefing clients ahead of departure.
Best Time to Visit
- January–February — hot, dry, and excellent for wildlife viewing with clear early-morning mountain views
- March–May — the long rains bring a lush, green landscape and newborn plains game
- June–October — cool, dry mornings with some of the clearest Kilimanjaro views of the year
- November–December — short rains, fewer crowds, and vivid post-rain lighting
